Abstract: The acquisition of English speaking proficiency remains a paramount objective in global education, serving as a crucial instrument for international communication and academic advancement. This study delves into the myriad factors that impede or facilitate the efficacy of English speaking activities during speaking lessons among high school students, utilizing Nguyen Trai High School as a focal case study. Through a qualitative research methodology, encompassing interviews, observations, and surveys involving students and educators, this investigation identifies key elements that either foster or hinder students’ active participation and progress in speaking activities. Prominent among the findings is the significant impact of psychological barriers, including fear of judgment and lack of confidence, which markedly diminish students’ willingness to engage in speaking exercises. Additionally, the study highlights the critical role of instructional methods, revealing that interactive and student-centered approaches significantly enhance speaking proficiency by fostering engagement and motivation. Environmental factors, such as classroom dynamics and the broader school language policy, also emerge as crucial influences, either supporting or undermining the learning process. Based on these insights, the research underscores the necessity for a holistic approach to teaching English speaking skills, advocating for strategies that address psychological barriers, employ innovative pedagogical methods, and cultivate a supportive learning environment. The findings of this case study at Nguyen Trai High School contribute valuable perspectives to the discourse on language education, offering actionable recommendations for educators aiming to optimize English speaking activities in high school settings.
